Dev Talk: Sound Designer Erick Ocampo, Front Mission Evolved

March 15th, 2010 | Sound Design, Video Games | Chris_Kowalski | No Comments

My name is Erick Ocampo, I am the Sound Designer on Front Mission Evolved. When I first found out I was going to work on a Square Enix game I was super excited! My main focus on the project was Wanzer sound effects and cinematics. I really wanted to capture the essence of each Wanzer pilot and bring out their personalities with vocal-like movement sounds for their Wanzer. I used a variety of sounds such as lions, male vocals, servos, farm animals, metal creaks, brass instruments, whales, and processed them with various plug-ins and other effect processors. My goal was to say clear of generic servo movement sounds and give these Wanzers a much more sophisticated feel.

Music Monday – Series 04 [2010]

March 15th, 2010 | Music, Music Monday | Chris_Kowalski | No Comments

I can't believe its been nearly 2 months since my last post. I sincerely apologize. We have been wrapping up Front Mission Evolved at the studio and its been extremely busy! I hope to do a better job in keeping up with posting more Music as well as some new content ideas I've been thinking about doing since the site's inception. Hang tight and enjoy some of the new finds!

-Chris

Tesla Boy – Runaway Man

Its been a long time since I've been this hooked on an EP.  The productions of Tesla Boy are simple, but STELLAR, and a throwback to the times of tape decks and neon lights. Love the drum programming, and the A-Ha esque vocals. Hailing from Moscow, Russia Tesla Boy are pure indication that when done right; synth pop can rule your playlist, your soul, and your feet. Pick up this EP!

Daisuke Tanabe -  Before I Forget LP

I heard my first Daisuke Tanabe record back in 2007, ever since then I've been hooked!  His new record 'Before I Forget' is a beautiful ride of carefully crafted beats, stunning soundscapes, playful melodies, and intricate sprinkles of imperfection.  I've gone through the album three times now, and with each time I enjoy it more and more. Pick this up!

Efterklang - Mirror Mirror

Fresh off their new record entitled "Magic Chairs". Efterklang are nothing short of awesome. Simple arrangements with complex instrumentation, beautiful vocal harmonizations, drenched in folk and fascination. Mirror Mirror starts with a mesmerizing piano line arpeggiating into a sea of sultry strings, and stirring stories. One of my favorite cuts on the album. Highly recommended.

Woolfy vs Projections – Absynth [Marcus Worgull Rmx]

Label Permanent Vacation has been on fire for me the last several months. Retro house music mixed with some amazing musicianship, and vocals (Sally Shapiro). On Abysnth, LA Native Woolfy kills it with his intoxicating work on the guitar. Meticulously placed vocals weaving in and out of this production.  Deep House veteran Marcus Worgull does an outstanding job of keeping you locked to the groove with his clever but hypnotic arrangement.

[BONUS] Corduba – Cambio

Another Permanent Vacation cut drenched in deep.

Michel Cleis – La Mezcla [Charles Webster Dub]

Sir Charles Webster needs to be knighted already. King of the groove without a doubt. . Absolutely stellar remix by one of house music's most celebrated producers.  I heard Mr. Webster's remix  of La Mezcla several months ago via his radio show on Samurai FM. After picking up the record I personally prefer the dub version to the full vocal mix. Classic Webster bassline and chord structure. Ethnic vibes, with a seductive woodwind melody. Breathtaking!

Ripperton – Lardo

Beautiful atmospheric tune. Gentle, lush, with a lovely vocal line mid way. This is the last cut on Ripperton's full length record, which is predominantly uptempo tech-house. Really nice way to close out a fantastic LP.

Wood Wall

Sorry for missing last weeks Music Monday. Its been bananas at the studio! Here's a pretty hefty selection this week to make up for it. Enjoy!! Tons of new content on the way as well. I promise. ;)

Ministries of Music (meets Paul Lomax) – Islands

Lush…warm.. and sensual texture. Like a blushing cloud smiling at the sun. I'm a sucker for anything with a saxophone in it; add in some lovely major 7th chords, synth bass, and percussion and I'm on my way. Killer!!

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Jean F Cochois – Like a Poison Snake

Taken from the newly released full length LP on label 'Listening Pearls'. Mr Cochois aka The Timewriter (Plastic City) always brings the beautiful vibes. I can't help but be impressed by all of his work, from the early Plastic City material to his driftwood stuff under his Drain Pipe guise. Perfect music for this time of year.

[Bonus] Borsig Allee

Keno One – A Shadow of the Self

Sick drum programming!! Head nodding tune, with killer upright, pizzicato strings, rhodes, and a string quartet to round it off. Bitchin! Reminds me a bit of 4hero with touch of the J to the A to the double Z : nova.

Washed Out – New Theory

What the F is this kid eating and/or drinking cuz he's just oozing with awesome! I don't think there has been a release of his that I have'nt absolutely gone ga-ga over. The fidelity is always super questionable, but what can I say its part of the reason I love it. Purity!! Simplistic melodies, haunting vocals, and enough reverb for YOUR track. ;)

Xuman – Panic

Pretty much borderline cheese, but I actually dig this. Reminds me of being a kid growing up in the 80s with my Duke of Hazzard lunchbox and Incredible Hulk onesie pajamas. I'm going to watch 'RAD" now!

Vampire Weekend – Run

Really diggin the new Vampire Weekend full length 'Contra'. One of the tunes that really connected with me on the first listen was 'Run'… its fun.. playful…kinda show tuney….and reminds me a lot of Peter Gabriel, and what he would have been like if there were more traveling carnivals in England.

balding_newyear

Port Royal – Balding Generation (Losing Hair Mix)

Dont let being bald be the pre-requisite to liking this tune. Its really sick! Lush pads laced with beautiful arpeggios and a driving beat and bassline. Its drenched in nostalgia reminiscent of Information Society/Anything Box and its pure bliss!

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Sally Shapiro – Moonlight Dance

Sally Shapiro's smooth sexy voice rocks this tune… its playful.. its sexy.. and it cant help but make we want to pop in License to Drive and grow a mullet.

Chymera – Sumatra

Beautiful bangin detroit seduction. I cant help but be reminded of Tron listening to this…. would be a perfect backround track to a light cycle race! ;)

Memory Tapes – Green Knight

Memory Tapes can do no wrong. Green Knight is a well balanced Journey… it takes you through the halls of sultry….and down the river of funk and flavor . Awesome

Explosions in the Sky – Six Days at the Bottom of the Ocean

Quite possibly one of my favorite Explosions in the Sky tracks of all time. I cant help but feel as though I've risen from the midst of adversity to conquer all obstacles when listening to this tune. Chills! Inspiration!

Gate Zero – White Sands Pt 1

One of my favorite albums of 2006. Gate Zero Black Dust blew me away with its killer beat programming…lush ambiance..and pure and delicate synthetic melodies.

Imax – Brush Park

Classic 2001 LL Records. Sick dubbed out Detroit flava reminiscent of old Basic Channel. Not really made for floor slaying.. but for taking a cyber trip to the heart of Detroit metro music. Lovely!

Steve Bug – Lover Boy (Josh Wink Remix)

By the middle of this tune Mr Wink has got the hairs on my arms standing up..my soul floating out on the dance floor doing samba shuffles with major 7th chords and classic Detroit city grooves.

Jori Hulkkonen – Man From Earth ft. Jerry Valuri

Lindstrøm & Christabelle – Baby Can't Stop

Lindstrom is on fire this year! The new LP alongside seductress Christabelle proves that the guy is money in the studio. Baby Cant Stop is pure fire…and I cant helped be reminded of classic Quincy Jones productions.

BlindFold – Fit You

Really great track. Vocals remind me alot of Thom Yorke + Rufus Wainwright. Super melancholy. I dig the space in this tune.

Nicolas Makelberge – Clean City

Taken from his amazing 2006 Album ‘Dying in Africa’.  The entire record is full of nostalgia, lush synth work,  and classic 80s vocals. The bassline gives me goosebumps! Madness!

As Tall As Lions

Phoenix – Fences (25 hrs a Day Remix)

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix has been really hot the last 3 months. Songs in ad placements all over the place. Fences has got to be one of my favorites, and the ’25 Hours a Day’ remix takes it to the next level. Catchy melody, lots of energy. Perfect track for the start of a new week.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Mountains – Untitled (Etchings EP)

Vinyl promo version of the Etchings EP. Not sure to the exact track title since its not written on the sleeve.. but this track is just sick. Really great vibe on this tune… make’s me feel like I’m taking  taking a helicopter ride over computer generated mountains.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

As Tall as Lions – Circles

Rad! This tune just gets me pumped up… what a great build from verse to chorus. Really love the off hit percussion and acoustic guitar. Unfortunately I wasn’t that into the rest of the album… it seemed to try too hard to be something it’s not. I’ll have to give it a few more listens for a final verdict.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Ion – Toujours

I recently got to share a release on Klik Records with Ion earlier this year and couldn’t help but post this sick tune taken from Ion’s ‘You and Me’ album. Hypnotic… deep electric vibes… who said machines have no soul? Toujours is classic deep techno at its best.
